The Hung Leung Hau Ling Distinguished Fellow in Humanities enhances Hong Kong's colourful cultural landscape

inauguration of the "Hung Leung Hau Ling Distinguished Fellow in Humanities" scheme

On October 18, the University celebrated the inauguration of the "Hung Leung Hau Ling Distinguished Fellow in Humanities" scheme, which was made possible through the generous support of the Hung Hing Ying and Leung Hau Ling Charitable Foundation.

The first incumbent of this scheme is Professor Lung Ying-tai, a renowned essayist and cultural critic, who gave the inaugural lecture entitled "Lung Ying-tai on Her Literary Path". The ceremony and lecture were attended by HKU Vice-Chancellor Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, Master of Robert Black College Professor K M Cheng, Mrs Hung Leung Hau-Ling, members of the Hung family and other distinguished guests.

In 2008, the Hung family made a donation of HK$15 million which was matched dollar for dollar by the University to form a perpetual endowment. The fund established the Hung Leung Hau Ling Distinguished Fellow in Humanities scheme in Madame Hung's name, as a gift from the Hung family to celebrate her eightieth birthday. Mrs Hung Leung Hau-Ling is the wife of the late Mr Hung Hing-Ying, after whom the Hung Hing Ying Building on HKU's Main Campus was named.

This scheme will host visiting humanities scholars renowned in their respective fields with the objective of enhancing and enriching humanities studies at the University which, in turn, contributes to the art and humanities culture of Hong Kong.

The Robert Black College will host an atelier for Lung where she can write and research during her residence at the University.
