A Force for Good

Established in 1998, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarships Scheme offers scholarships to outstanding local and Mainland undergraduate students. To date, the Scheme has benefitted more than 400 students. Four HKU students were such JC Scholars this year in recognition of their academic achievement and passion to serving the community.

Jasmine Hong Jin-shan (BJ, Year 2) is one of the newly awarded Scholars. “The Scholarship offers me the opportunity to explore the most of my potential without being shackled by financial restrictions. To pass it on, I decided to pledge ten percent of my lifelong income to charitable organisations that tackle global poverty, and I have put this into action for nearly six months now. In the future, I wish to work as a media expert for non-profit organisations, so that I can disseminate the messages of the underprivileged population to the world.” Jasmine will be going on exchange in the coming academic year to Yale University.

Apart from financial support, the Scheme also encourages scholars to share their philanthropic values and serve as a force for good in society.

Linda Cheung Ka-Man (LLB, Year 4), an HKJC Scholar in 2012, has become actively involved in community services through The Jockey Club Scholars Alumni Association. “I remember how we were assigned to assist the visually impaired at a DIY Tissue Box Crafts workshop, but it turns out that my partner could do almost everything himself and he knew much more than I do in some aspects. This reminds me that we in fact can learn a lot from the so-called “needy” and we should not regard ourselves as superior to them. Instead we should be their companions, and to share with them our happiness and our love.”

It is hoped that the HKJC Scholars will exemplify the spirit of service and reach out even more to the community to help make Hong Kong a better place for all.
