Cheng Yu Tung Tower marks a new chapter in the development of the Faculty of Law

The University of Hong Kong celebrated the official opening of the Cheng Yu Tung Tower on November 8, 2012. The Tower is the first-ever standalone building for the Faculty of Law since its establishment in 1969.

HKU is extremely grateful to Dr Cheng Yu-Tung, founder of the Chow Tai Fook Charity Foundation, for his generous donation of HK$400 million made in 2008. In recognition of his support, the new Law building on the Centennial Campus is named after Dr Cheng Yu-Tung. The immense benefaction of Dr Cheng will drive the continuing development of the campus and the Faculty of Law.

Dr Henry Cheng Kar-Shun

Dr Henry Cheng Kar-Shun, son of Dr Cheng Yu-Tung and Honorary Chairman of Chow Tai Fook Charity Foundation, spoke at the Dedication Ceremony: “Our family attaches great importance to the Faculty. We sincerely hope that with this new development, the Faculty can help further advance the concept of the rule of law and contribute to the prosperity of both Hong Kong and the Mainland.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Lap-Chee Tsui hailed the gift as a testimony to the extraordinary partnership between the Cheng Family and HKU over the years. Professor Johannes Chan, Dean of Law, thanked Dr Cheng Yu-Tung and his family: “To us, the new home, made possible by Dr Cheng’s generous donation, is a commitment to the important and unique mission of the Faculty in maintaining and developing the rule of law in Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland.”

The joyous occasion was graced by Dr Henry Cheng, his younger brother Mr Peter Cheng, and their family members; Professor Andrew Li, former Chief Justice of Hong Kong, as the guest of honour; Sir T L Yang; Dr David Li; Dr Victor Fung; Dr C H Leong; and more than 100 distinguished guests had the opportunity to tour the Cheng Yu Tung Tower after the ceremony.
