Kingboard Professorship in Materials Engineering

May 2011

“It is always new materials that open the door to new technologies. Kingboard whole-heartedly supports this Endowed Professorship in Materials Engineering and HKU’s mission in being the vanguard in technological advancement.” Kingboard Chemical Holdings Limited

In May 2011, a dedication ceremony was held to celebrate the establishment of the Kingboard Professorship in Materials Engineering, which was made possible through a donation of $10 million from the Kingboard Chemical Holdings Limited and matched by the University to form a permanent endowment of $20 million.

The ceremony was attended by friends of Kingboard Chemical Holdings Limited and the University, and was followed by a dinner in honour of the Kingboard Chemical Holdings Limited at University Lodge.

The establishment of the Kingboard Professorship in Materials Engineering will assist Professor Alfonso Hing-Wan Ngan (being the inaugural incumbent) in his pre-eminent research. Graduating from HKU in 1989 with First Class Honours, Professor Ngan was also that year’s recipient of the Williamson Prize which is awarded to the best student in the Faculty of Engineering. He joined HKU as a Lecturer in Materials Technology and Solid Mechanics in 1993, and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2003, and then to Professor in 2006. He has won several outstanding researcher awards and received invitations to present plenary and keynote papers at numerous international conferences.
