Naming Ceremony of the Tin Ka Ping Education Library

Naming Ceremony of the Tin Ka Ping Education Library

May 2017

The Education Library was named the Tin Ka Ping Education Library at a ceremony held on April 12, 2017 to honour the Tin Ka Ping Foundation 田家炳基金會 (the Foundation) for the generous support it has given the Faculty of Education (the Faculty) of The University of Hong Kong since 1991.

The connection between the Foundation and HKU dates back to the establishment of the Tin Ka Ping Visiting Fellowship Scheme at the Faculty in 1991. This support from the Foundation has enabled hundreds of Mainland academics and educators from different disciplines to come to HKU as Visiting Fellows. Learning from and sharing with their peers, these Visiting Fellows take back to their posts new perceptions and broadened horizons. This outcome has played an important part in fulfilling the mission of the Foundation.

The Training Programme for Principals from Gansu Province, which was established in 2013-14, is another partnership between the Faculty and the Foundation that allowed the Faculty to establish a pioneering cross-border training programme for principals of kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, and education directors at the province’s Ministry of Education. The commitment of the Foundation to this project extends to 2018, which makes it a signature project that both the Faculty and the Foundation are proud of.

In addressing the guests at the naming ceremony, Mr Sam Tin Hing-Sin, Chairman of the Foundation, said, “Throughout the years, we have built many schools and funded many education projects on the Mainland. We are grateful and blessed to have many partners giving us all kinds of support to make all this possible. Among all these associates, HKU is undoubtedly an indispensable partner who shares our dreams.”

Professor Stephen Andrews expressed the Faculty’s gratitude to Dr Tin and his Foundation. “The Faculty has been greatly honoured to receive generous support from the Tin Ka Ping Foundation since 1991, and we are immensely grateful for the Foundation’s recent donation which will be invaluable in supporting the Faculty’s long-term development by providing scholarships for our research postgraduate students, and grants for postgraduate/undergraduate students participating in experiential learning programmes.”

Also attending the ceremony were members of the Tin family, board members of the Foundation, board of directors of the HKU Foundation, as well as members of the Faculty.
