With a $2.4 million donation from Tsz Shan Monastery, the Centre for Chinese Architecture and Urbanism of the Faculty of Architecture together with Tsz Shan Institute will spearhead a 4-year teaching and research programme on the study of Buddhist Architecture in China and Asia.
The Tsz Shan Monastery has been a landmark for Buddhist architectural structure and layout since its opening in 2015. The impact of Tsz Shan will go much deeper when partnering with the Faculty of Architecture to create the Tsz Shan Programme: Study of Buddhist Architecture. Venerable Thong Hong, Abbot of the Monastery, pointed out “… there will now be an opportunity for students to be inspired by the rich heritage and traditions of Buddhism across Asia and China”.
The generous support from Tsz Shan will enable a multifaceted study of Buddhism. There will have a new Common Core Curriculum course for undergraduates and a research programme designed with a sustained focus cutting across a wide spectrum of studies. A series of publications will document the fruits of the collaboration between the University and the Monastery.
Professor Wang Wei-Jen of the Department of Architecture will develop the Programme. He will look into the physical and visual significance, as well as the spiritual and spatial practice of the Buddhist Architecture in the built environment among us.
