Chi-Li Pao Foundation Professorship in Cancer Medicine
Professor Rina Hui assumed the Directorship of the Centre of Cancer Medicine, LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKU) in January 2023 with a role to foster collaboration amongst various disciplines in cancer research and integrated teaching for medical students. She is a well-established medical oncologist with a clinical and research focus on breast and lung cancers. Professor Hui serves as an Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology at Queen Mary Hospital as well as a member of the Senate, a member of the Honorary Fellowships Committee and chairs the Committee on Discontinuation at HKU. She is a council member of the Hong Kong Cancer Therapy Society and a steering committee member of the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Registry.
Additionally, Professor Hui is a passionate educator. With rising cancer incidence in the ageing population and the increasing complexity of the rapidly evolving cancer treatment landscape, she revamped the HKU Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Cancer Medicine curriculum with a new 8-week comprehensive integrated block in October 2024, to equip the next generation of medical doctors with fundamental knowledge of cancer management.
After completing her medical degree at the University of Sydney and specialist training at the Royal North Shore Hospital, Professor Hui undertook translational research in cyclin D1-CDK4/6-p16INK4a-pRb pathway in breast cancer at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and was awarded a PhD degree. Before joining HKU, she was a Clinical Professor at the University of Sydney and a Senior Medical Oncologist at Westmead Hospital, Australia. She previously served as Co-chair of Oncology Block at the Sydney Medical School, the University of Sydney and a member of the written examination committee for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
Internationally, Professor Hui serves on the Education Committee for International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), the organising committee for the World Cancer Congress 2026, the global consensus committee on non-metastatic Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC), and the steering committee for many international clinical trials in both lung and breast cancers.
Professor Hui has a strong passion in clinical research, not only advancing scientific knowledge and improving patients’ outcome, but also safely providing new state-of-the-art costly drugs to cancer patients, minimising the burden of self-funding. She is currently the Clinical Director of the Cancer Clinical Trials Unit and was previously the Head of Clinical Trials at the Westmead Breast Cancer Institute. She has been a principal investigator on phase I as well as many landmark practice-changing phase III clinical studies of immunotherapy and targeted therapies in lung and breast cancers, resulting in publications in highly ranked journals, making her one of the world’s top 1% scholars ranked by Clarivate Analytics.
